Paediatric Chiropractic

Baby crawlingYou may be wondering why your child would need to see a chiropractor. Many people think that chiropractic is just for adults with back or neck pain. Children, however, can benefit from getting regular adjustments.

Consider how many falls and bumps a child gets when they’re growing up. A lot! Chiropractic helps children avoid the patterns that adults develop. This type of natural care helps to correct the improper biomechanics and promote proper functioning when they’re young, so it doesn’t turn into a worse problem.

Common Childhood Conditions We See

Chiropractic care doesn’t cure or treat children’s issues, but many of our young patients have experienced improvement with the following:

  • Bedwetting
  • Colic
  • Ear infections
  • Headaches
  • Latching difficulties

Yes! We never adjust children using the same amount of pressure that we would with an adult patient. For babies, we employ the amount of pressure that’s used to check a tomato for ripeness.

The specific techniques we use are either Diversified or Activator Methods®. Depending on how small or large the child is, we can use the Thompson Technique too. But again, the adjustments always will be gentle, regardless of the technique used.

Many kids have their problems resolved in just a few sessions.

If your child has never been adjusted before, they may be unsure of what to expect. Your child can hop up on the adjusting table or you can hold them while they get adjusted. We may do some gentle rib adjustments or behind the neck.

Dr. Brian will talk to his young patients and explain what he’s going to look at. He always asks children for consent. For example, he may say, “Do you want to have your neck looked at?” It’s important to him that children participate in their care by either agreeing to get adjusted or saying no. It’s up to the child. We never will do anything without their permission.

In the absence of an injury, this is one of the questions we get asked most often. Some children develop headaches as a result of the birthing process. All of the many falls and injuries kids have when they’re learning to walk or falling off their bicycle or even sitting too long at school all can set the stage for issues adults get.

How Our Care Helped a Young Patient

A little boy named Bradley would come in complaining of a headache. His mom was wondering if he was just repeating what he heard his parents say. So she wanted to find out if her son truly had a headache. Dr. Brian examined him and determined that Bradley did have some subluxations in his neck. When he would come in, he would say, “Mommy, neck hurt” over and over. During one appointment, however, he stopped saying it as chiropractic resolved his pain.
